This photo is a sad reminder that my external hard drive got corrupted and I lost many precious photos, including urban shots of China like this one. They are RAW images from my camera and I did not have a backup! Fortunately, I still have this snapshot from my phone as a consolation.
So sorry to hear about the hard drive, Jeremy 😕 Hopefully not too many photos there and you have some somewhere else 😕😕

I do not have a secondary backup. However, after a few weeks of despair, I suddenly had an idea of trying my luck with the camera’s SD card which I have re-formatted and even rewritten a few times. Apparently when you delete a file, it isn’t really erased – it continues existing somewhere, even after you emptied it from the Recycle Bin. I managed to recover quite some photos from there and all is well 🙂

I have many photos saved on Google. Maybe make photo books of your favorite photos for each of your trip, from now on (if you ask me). I’m so glad I made one for my Machu Picchu trip.
I know… it can be time-consuming.

Do you save them in Google as JPG or RAW format? I have the impression that Google doesn’t accept RAW but I could be wrong. Anyway, it is a painful lesson and I backup in the cloud now. Yes, in fact I started planning my first photo book last week. I think you have a blog post or mentioned about photo books way before Machu Picchu trip, right? I was inspired to make one since then.

Thank you for remembering the photo book I mentioned sometime ago. Honestly, RAW or not it really doesn’t matter to my humble photos. So long they can bring me sweet memories, I’m good. 🙂 BTW, I also use external hard drives, they can be risky too.
But, but your photos are masterpieces. Hope you didn’t lose too many, so very painful… Happy to know you made your first photo book! 🙂 🙂
